Red Sky at Night...Lutz's Delight
If you've followed my commentary on Bob Lutz's writings on the GM Fastlane Blog, you'll know that I'm not really a car guy. I'm interested in Lutz's determined efforts to resusitate GM through design, and in his groundbreaking senior executive blogging.
But the faithful over at Fastlane...they're car guys (sorry, ladies, it's mostly guys.) And they LOVED today's preview of the Saturn Red Sky. Lutz says Saturn will be rolling out several new Saturn models at the NY Auto Show next month (which I'll be attending for the second consecutive year for the first time in my life!), but, as any good marketer knows (and Lutz is nothing if not that in addition to being a design legend), teasers are great.
Listen to some of the comments:
This took guts and determination. Don't let the bean counters hold you back, make the best car you can and let the halo effect work its magic!
Absolutely brilliant. Assuming the cost will be reasonable (which I imagine will be true, since the base Sky is a bargain), the Sky Red Line will bring a whole new audience to the Saturn dealerships: those wanting killer looks and good performance from their weekend cruiser.
Thanks for sending the man, not the boy, so to speak.
Well Mr. Lutz you've done it again. First the Solstice and now the Red Line...
Lots more like that. Then, there was this one:
I was glad when I read the Business Week article that said we can speak directly to the man.
If my opinon matters to you then you matter to me.
That is why at least to me this blog has a mission and vision. To offer GM every type of advantage by speaking directly to its customer, not to find the truth but at least the truth of what they are thinking, and the truth will set you free.
Now a lot of people cannot handle the truth. Name another company that wants to hear the truth? They don't want the truth. At best they get a filtered analysis from second tier management. What will they say?
Great question: "name another company that wants to hear the truth?"
Do you need more evidence of the power of communicating directly with your customers? Do you need more evidence of the impact that communication has on their perception of you? Do you need more evidence of the changes taking place?
Bob Lutz is writing a new owner's manual for senior managers. I suggest you get yours to read it.
