Lori Queen, a new contributor, appeared on the Fastlane Blog this evening. Lori tells us that she works for Bob Lutz and is responsible for the Pontiac Solstice program.
Welcome to Blogsylvania, Lori.
Ever since Kendra smoked the somnambulistic duo of Tana and Craig by putting together a brilliant brochure in an all-nighter on The Appretice, the Solstice has been a hot vehicle. I saw it at the New York Auto Show back in March (which is one of the more bizarre sentences I've ever written!) and said at the time:
Bob's Pontiac Solstice actually looked hot! This car...seemed competitive in design, color, fit and finish; certainly no Lexus, but undoubtedly an improvement over current offerings.
Lori tells us that production will begin this summer and that the lucky first 1,000 customers (whose orders were taken in 41 minutes) should expect their vehicles by the end of October (in time for Pop!Tech). Presently, Lori reports that there are more than 8,000 Solstice orders pending.
Not bad.
Truth be told, this feels like an attempt to create a "scarcity mentality" for the Solstice, which is perfectly legitimate. If GM could create a perception of an unmet demand for the Solstice, like some Cadillac models have reportedly had over the last couple of years, this might help stir some interest in the car and, hence, the company.
Fair enough. But the company's fate will not be settled in the roadster segment. Sedans, trucks, coupes and SUVs will determine whether or not GM will make it to quarter-century (2025) or not.
But Lori's doing her best and it's good to hear another voice pitching in.
